One of our customers recently experienced a sudden increase in upper extremity cumulative trauma complaints. Following evaluation of several of these patients, we visited with the employer about the possible source of these injuries. It was brought to our attention that the employer had initiated a new process for their production line that involved different physical demands than had been previously performed by their employees. We discussed options for evaluation of this process to determine the possible root cause of the complaints. This employer made a decision to have a physical therapist visit their work-site to analyze the new process and offer suggestions. Following a review by the therapist, the employer made several modifications that reduced the physical stresses on the workers in this area. They also decided to implement a pre-shift exercise/stretching program, beginning with employees in this production area and later to include all production employees.

The results thus far have been very positive. The incidence of complaints is down and the employees are reporting minor symptoms earlier. Further potential modifications will be evaluated on an on-going basis as the employer monitors the outcome of these changes.
